Understanding Hadith – The Prophetic Teachings That Complete Our Faith

While the Qur’an is the word of Allah, the Hadith are the recorded sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Together, the Qur’an and Hadith form the foundation of Islamic belief and practice.

1. What Is Hadith?

A hadith is a report that tells us:

  • What the Prophet (ﷺ) said

  • What he did

  • What he approved or disapproved in front of his companions

For example:

  • Instructions about prayer

  • Advice on character and manners

  • Guidance on family and community life

These teachings help us understand how to live the Qur’an practically.

2. Why Are Hadith Important?

The Qur’an often gives general commands, and the Hadith explains how to follow them.

Examples:

  • The Qur’an commands us to establish salah, but the Hadith explains:

    • how many prayers per day

    • how many units (rak’ah)

    • how to perform them correctly

  • The Qur’an commands us to give zakat, but the Hadith explains:

    • how much

    • on which types of wealth

    • how it should be distributed

Without Hadith, many aspects of Islamic practice would remain unclear. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not only recite the Qur’an, he also lived it, and his life is recorded through Hadith.

3. How Were Hadith Preserved?

The companions (Sahabah) loved the Prophet (ﷺ) deeply and paid close attention to his words and actions. They memorised and sometimes wrote them down. Later generations of scholars travelled to collect these narrations, verify their authenticity, and compile them.

They developed a science called ‘Ilm al-Hadith (the science of Hadith) which studies:

  • The chain of narrators (isnad)

  • The text of the hadith (matn)

  • The character and memory of each narrator

Through this, scholars classified hadith into categories like:

  • Sahih (authentic)

  • Hasan (good)

  • Da’if (weak)

This process protects the teachings of Islam from fabrication and confusion.

4. Major Books of Hadith

Some of the most well-known authentic collections include:

  • Sahih al-Bukhari

  • Sahih Muslim

  • Sunan Abu Dawood

  • Jami’ at-Tirmidhi

  • Sunan an-Nasa’i

  • Sunan Ibn Majah

There are other collections too, but these are commonly studied and referenced worldwide.

5. What Kind of Topics Do Hadith Cover?

Hadith cover almost every area of a Muslim’s life:

  • Aqeedah (belief) – faith in Allah, angels, prophets, etc.

  • Ibadah (worship) – prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj

  • Akhlaq (character) – honesty, patience, humility, mercy

  • Mu’amalat (dealings) – business, contracts, justice, rights

  • Family life – marriage, parenting, rights of husband and wife

  • Community life – brotherhood, helping others, conflict resolution

They show us how the Prophet (ﷺ) behaved in times of ease and difficulty, happiness and sorrow, victory and hardship.

6. How Should We Approach Hadith Today?

For many Muslims, the main challenge is where to start. Here are some simple and safe steps:

  • Read authentic collections that are easy and suitable for general Muslims, such as:

    • Riyad-us-Saliheen

    • 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi

  • Make sure you refer to reliable translations and scholars

  • Never build big religious judgments from random social media posts—always check authenticity

  • When you hear a beautiful hadith, try to practice it in daily life

7. Hadith and Good Character

A large part of the Prophet’s mission was to perfect good character. Many hadith focus on:

  • Smiling

  • Speaking gently

  • Controlling anger

  • Forgiving others

  • Taking care of the weak and the poor

When we study Hadith seriously, we realise that Islam is not only about rituals, but also about becoming a better human being.

Conclusion

Hadith are a priceless treasure for the Muslim community. They explain, complete, and bring to life the teachings of the Qur’an. By learning and practising the authentic hadith, we strengthen our relationship with the Prophet (ﷺ) and bring his beautiful example into our own lives.
